I love the idea of "Finds of the Day", but unfortunately I know that some people tend to be a bit more unscrupulous than most of us - we've all seen this before on the commercial rallies. There was the famous case at a organised rally two years ago where one of the Finds of the Day entries had purchase the item the week before off E-bay and ended up winning a Fisher detector, and another one where the Medieval silver ring brooch put in as an entry had red clay still on it, yet they were detecting on black peat coloured soil. Its strange what some people will do in life for attention. Thankfully this does not happen to the best of my knowledge at DW rallies.

I think we should have a couple "Finds of the Day" competitions a year, but not announce at which rallies they are at and do it the same way as yesterday, where we just ask anyone who wants to enter at 4pm to join us in the parking field. It seemed to work well.

I shall have a word with Geoff regarding prizes. Unless of course members want to make donations.

Any other thoughts

Neil

I like your idea Neil. It would be workable as you have explained it and as you have said I to have seen finds presented at rallies that tend to be so obviously not fresh out of the ground and had red clay on it and we were detecting chalk upland where the soil is like sand and almost black.

ha ha,  iv'e seen lots of it going on in the past,  one guy at the rallies was well known for it,
he'd bought a roman brooch off a stall at one and put it in lol,  it was disqualified  when the stall holder had told them he'd bought it off him earlier,
whats more that type are not found in this country, their from poland or somewhere like that, lol,
iv'e seen him with some before on rallies, and pretending to find hammered and roman on the field,  even pushing his own mud,/ soil onto them ,  lol

It would be good to have find of the day in specified categories....Coins, artifacts etc

But not to give prizes, the pleasure of having the best find should be sufficient enough reward for the finder.

I still say I should have won find of the day for my two feet of chain.

Maybe a prize for best swan dive into a tractor rut too? The prize being a walking stick or spade attachment ;D

Well said Phil

Whenever theres a prize of any value attached to an award you,ll get people cheating.
A laminated award would be enough of a reward for a genuine detectorist.

even tho i did vote for a prize, and started this topic thinking about it i go along with Neil have a prize at random rallies to stop any shenanigans, even tho folks should not do that ;)

have to agree with neil on this one kev. the idea is a sound one but you'll always have some  sad  git who'll bring something along with him for "the prize". not only that you may get a decent chap/chappess who'll have a really great find and the finger of doubt will be pointed by a few.
unless the prize is merely a certificate, or mention in despatches (on here) with a pic and post on the rally thread?

one way to tackle this potential problem, would be to award certificates for best coin, best artefact, that has been recorded with the onsite FLO that day.

this will encourage people to record their finds, in accordance with the principles of responsible detecting.

i don't think there should be monetary prizes, but a certificate - possibly framed, is always welcome.

cheers

Good idea Kev
A certificate I think would work, and probably stop the cheating don't think the low life cheat would fancy a certificate
a good idea mate  ;)
