Detecting in the dark is blooming hard work. I have trouble in bright daylight. It certainly isn't enjoyable worrying about the hand on your shoulder. I'd rather enjoy the hobby and find nowt.

These are the ones that Tony Bliddy Robinson should go after, the silly ole fossil,  not the ones that help and add to our knowledge and heritage

Should have known better at his age but deserves all he gets...agree with pipster the helicopter seems a bit excessive. What makes me think is the part about the ammunition, did he have live ammunition for a firearm? or are we talking about the bullets we all seem to find at one time or another. Are we libel as well to get charged with an offense for being in possession of  the .22 - 303 & any other ammunition we dig up, food for thought ???

Interesting point Fred, it would appear that there is indeed confusion as to the meaning of the word "ammunition". Possession is a given, but as to whether or not they need to be assembled and live is another matter...

http://www.firearmsexpert.co.uk/ammunition.html (http://www.firearmsexpert.co.uk/ammunition.html)

Quote: "A cartridge with, for instance, a non-functioning primer will not ignite and will not be classed as ammunition, despite having the appearance of a live round."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammunition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammunition)

Quote "Ammunition, often informally referred to as ammo, is a generic term derived from the French language la munition which embraced all material used for war (from the Latin munire, to provide), but which in time came to refer specifically to gunpowder and artillery. The collective term for all types of ammunition is munitions. In the widest sense of the word it covers anything that can be used in combat that includes bombs, missiles, warheads, and mines (landmines, naval mines, and anti-personnel mines) – that munitions factories manufacture. The purpose of ammunition is predominantly to project force against a selected target. However, the nature of ammunition use also includes delivery or combat supporting munitions such as pyrotechnic or incendiary compounds. Since the design of the cartridge, the meaning has been transferred to the assembly of a projectile and its propellant in a single package.

The subject of ammunition is a complex one which covers application of fire to targets, general use of weapons by personnel, explosives and propellants, cartridge systems, high explosive projectiles (HE), warheads, shaped charge forms of attack on armour and aircraft, carrier projectiles, fuzes, mortar ammunition, small arms ammunition, grenades, mines, pyrotechnics, improved conventional munitions, and terminally guided munition."

However

Quote:"ammunition  • noun 1 a supply or quantity of bullets and shells."
