Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: The Doc on April 16, 2010, 06:52:10 PM Great find Bob. Looks to me like a T-shape brooch, 1st-2nd century.
Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: handyman [Alan} on April 16, 2010, 06:54:25 PM yeah it could be a crossbow, but if u take a look at the posted link, about halfway down the page is a piccy almost identical to bobs - unless me eyes deceive me!!
however, i'm happy to stand corrected Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: Passingclod(Andrew) on April 16, 2010, 07:04:21 PM hi

Mines very slightly different but similar. Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: Chef Geoff on April 17, 2010, 10:33:45 PM No it's not a trumpet brooch. A trumpet brooch is named because it has a conical end similar to the horn end of a trumpet.
Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: handyman [Alan} on April 18, 2010, 07:08:17 AM Hi Geoff
i can see where you are coming from and would agree that that was my initial understanding of a trumpet brooch. however, i think the definition of 'trumpet' may be wider in academic circles. below are links which suggest that maybe bobs brooch falls within the wider definition, than our own understanding. cheers, http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/museumcollections/collections/storydetail.php?irn=566&master=449 (http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/museumcollections/collections/storydetail.php?irn=566&master=449) http://www.darwincountry.org/explore/013341.html (http://www.darwincountry.org/explore/013341.html) http://www.essexdetectorsociety.org/page14.htm (http://www.essexdetectorsociety.org/page14.htm) Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: Chef Geoff on April 18, 2010, 09:13:34 AM Alan, Link 1 and 2 are or were shaped like a Trumpet and 3 is difficult to see from the side. It's the cross piece that makes it a Crossbow brooch. none of the above have a defined cross piece.
Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: sodbuster on April 18, 2010, 09:21:27 AM Any chance of a picture of the front of the brooch ?
Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: zorro on April 18, 2010, 10:23:47 AM Bob thanks a fabulous brooch you found there mate. I've added it to the database. If you'd like me to add more info please pm me. ie: finds spot (nothing exact, county or area will do) ad whether found on ploughed pasture stubble beach etc.
cheers kev Title: Re: Roman Brooch Post by: Chef Geoff on April 18, 2010, 08:53:36 PM Well I have to take it all back. I have just got an email back from Birmingham uni, (they id finds for the 60-61 group) and the broach is, and I quote " a Colchester T-shaped (Doc was right, sorry Doc) brooch of the Lower Severn type, utilising a Polden Hills spring system. dating it to the 2nd century and probably no later than 180AD. One of a pair worn with a connecting chain.
