Title: Pigeon Rings
Post by: Jonola (Jon) on March 20, 2010, 10:17:29 AM
Anyone ever found a pigeon ring? They contain dating details of the pigeon and ownership. For example if you found WHU 77P 1324 you would know it was a Welsh pigeon (WHU...Welsh Homing Union) and was ringed in 1977. Seeing as pigeons have been ringed for over 100 years there must be a few about. Modern ones are encased in plastic coating.

Cheers Rich. I also have the addresses for the pigeons ringed in the UK WHU, Wales, GB, NHU and others. Even the odd foreigner turns up.

Ive found a few but like most Buckles i either pass then on or bin them
I remember at the last Rooksbridge rally someone showed me a pigeon ring with a leg attached  :o

I think most of the rings owners end up a tasty snack for a hawks
Ive got a Pigeon fancier next door and last week i was playing with the dog in the garden and i seen the guy next door banging on his locked patio door trying to get out
Turned out he was watching his prized bird getting mauled but an Hawk.and he was trying to distract it  lol
he said he,d paid £1,000 for this bird  :o :o :o :o :o i wouldnt pay that got a car ! lol

http://www.irishhomingunion.com/page7.htm (http://www.irishhomingunion.com/page7.htm)

This has a list of contacts. Although there must be hundreds of thousands of pigeons ringed every year. I saw a directory for one year just of English pigeon fanciers. It was like a Thomson phone directory!
