Title: romans for id please
Post by: James on January 31, 2010, 10:47:38 PM
hi these were found today i think there both republican, but thats it. the complete one was blank when found , i give it some silver foil treatment and it started to get so hot i could not hold it, there was actually steam coming off the coin wrapped in foil in the sink and when i used the foil on it again bits of silver flaked of it and the details were underneath  ??? i had a similar situation with a nerva denarius that had a poor reverse, that too got very hot and flaked off some silver. sorry about the pic quality i have not got any batterys for my camera, so i had to scan them  ;)

Well found James, nice coins. The whole coin is L. Aemilius Lepidus Paullus, 62 BC, like this:

a lovely find -- please record it with tyour local FLO.

the information of its location and type is so importnat that the recording of such coinage is changing our understanding of trade links with rome, 100 years before the invasion.

cheers

excellent news James --  the PAS records database is making a massive difference to our understanding of history. And most of it is down to detectorists recording finds.

most archaeologists today, refer to the database and most of them are very appreciative of our contribution to the recording process.

it's so important to record the finds.

cheers - c u at the next rally

Here's the broken one, took a bit more looking!

It's Mn. Cordius Rufus, from 46BC.

Way to go James - cracking finds mate!

Lovely to find a Republican or any coin minted before the late JC. :)

Were they on Welsh soil out of curiosity?

Cheers
Neil
