At present I am still awaiting valuation committee initial valuation of the whistle. Dates given are correct ...................hence given up holding my breath !) Discovered September 2006 Presented to FLO Peter Reavill 14-09-06 After misdating object to Georgian period . The whistle was reassessed to Post Medieaval (1500-1650) July 07 July 07 presented under treasure act ..dcms reciept obtained 16-09-08 recipts and report sent to coroner for submission to inquest 01-07-09 notification from coroner for inquest date 14-07-07 Sent to National Museum of Wales 31-07-09 inquest at Welshpool..Declared treasure. 20-11-09 Whistle transfered from Museum of Wales To British Museum 09-12-09 Recieved British Museum and awaiting valuation, As Rob has said......To Be Continued..... I had to look up what a "Hawking whistle was used for as i was unsure. Whereas across the border they go direct to BM. I am now having to try and explain to landowner (also my landlord) why its taking so long.
It does not exactly inspire confidence and in the end I can see some poor detectorists losing search permission because landowners may think they have been cheated out of rewards . I have recieved a letter from valuation commitee today giving a provisional valuation of £100 for the whistle (with estimate auction value of £80-£120). The basic reasons for valuation are based on the facts, 1 the item is plain without decoration and ,2 small in size I am now in the process of trying to get independant valuation Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated Thank you Ian Title: Re: Hawking whistle my experience (given up holding my breath)UPDATED 30-01-10 Post by: ancientpat on January 30, 2010, 04:12:04 PM Just got settlement of my treasure item, reported May 2007, 2years and 8 months. I understand that one coroner to cover all Treasure is proposed as this is where the hold ups seem to be.

But I still need another valuation to satisfy valuation committee, so if anyone has any ideas of who also may be worth contacting, all advice greatly appreciated.

This was duly sent to treasure committee, that dismissed it out of hand as unworthy (my words not theirs but that was the general tone of reply) Bonham's and Christies did not even bother to reply, so much for professional ethics . I have used both of these in the past on an other matter and had a totally different experience. After going to valuation committee again still offer of £100, by this time land owner is getting anxious , so I except offer to smooth things over, BM request bank details because they dont issue cheques, these were sent in early July and at present I am still waiting for £50 !! Could be worse I may have been waiting for 6 figure sum of Staffordshire hoard etc And they wonder why so many finds go unrecorded or sold on fleabay |
