Title: Advice for beginers
Post by: KenKelowna on November 01, 2008, 01:06:21 AM
Beginer.
No matter what machine you use, get to know it.
Hunt where you can expect to find your target.
Persevere with low discrimination, you will find good stuff.
Never give up.
Always treat your machine with care as per the manufacturers instructions.
One tip I can give is, if you are using earphones ( you should) put tape over the machines speaker opening, it will prevent dust and sand from sticking to the magnetic speaker inside and creating problems.
Good Luck

Hi Ken

Thanks for the speaker tip I.ll pass it on to my detecting buddy and Father in law Des
Hes got a Fisher 1236x2 and hes having trouble with sand at the moment entering the speaker vent
I dont think he ever uses the detector without phones so it would be a good idea to clean it out and tape it up

Regards
Phil Jones

Good advice Ken. Also using headphones does two things, it stops annoying others with the constant bleeping noise and it apparently reduces battery usage, how it does that I don't know but I read that somewhere !!

it also sends the signal sounds straight to your ears , where the quieter ones would be lost with out head phones, and they are often the best,
you wouldn't hear them for  the surrounding natural noises without them,
but hey,  they help keep your ears warm in winter too ,

Hi all

Good Point Alan
With the current sightings of Wild Dangerous animals in the west country use headphones with caution. lol
Ive got pair of Maz big blues that blocks out all sounds  :o

I always thought all headphones are the same but my Big blues are no good on my Explorer to quiet.
I know most people dont like the Koss headhones but i havnt come across anything louder.
if only they could make them  smaller .....they make me look like Princess laya from the Star wars Films  he he  :D

Title: - Dig !
Post by: Hugo Falck on November 10, 2008, 05:04:10 PM
If you wanna dig, - dig !
If youre in doubt  - dIg !
If the signal sounds crappy - you may dig !
(some of my best finds sounded real bad, and these findings makes you feel double- lucky)

I would second Ken on that! If in doubt dig it out!

I found my Medieval silver and gilt ring that way. I had a signal on the Explorer II that was Iron, but then also a low silver tone. I dug 12 inches and pulled out an Iron plough shard, but the signal is still there and now just low!

I dug a bit further and there sat on the clay bed was a mans silver & gilt ring. At the BM now waiting for theresult.

If in doubt dig it man!

Neil

Hiya Ken
My best tips for you would be to try & search as slow as is possible & to keep the search head as close to the ground & as parralell to the ground as you can. Also, something else I do is to always keep a medium sized sandwich bag with me so in the event of a downpour I can completely cover up the control box.
Hope this helps
Kris

Lovely ring Neil  ;D

Im the same i cant leave a weak or broken signal in the ground I always thing is it deep down or next to some iron.
Even with the big advancement in detector technology the old adage still rings true

"If In doubt Dig it Out"
