Title: 1818
Post by: TheLoveDoc on January 08, 2010, 01:04:53 PM
Hi again all  :) out this morning for a few hours and i cant believe how hard the ground is ....very difficult to dig in some places but did manage to find my oldest coin yet .... am i correct in thinking its a shilling ? Gonna be a while before i find one older than this one i think  :-\

Also some lead shot and what seems to be a buckle ? Any info on the buckle would be helpfull  ;) Oh and of course a letter "P" which i think is from a grave stone as there is a graveyard not too far away.

Then you've got yourself a lovely George iii  'Bullhead'  Sixpence.     Proper silver well done

Take a pic of the back and front fella, try and put the coin on a black background  like card or a trousers leg. I'll put it on the gallery.

Make sure you take the pic at the same distance as well so the image is the same size

Nice piece of silver LoveDoc - if I can dig up a milled silver coin (or several  ;D)  when I go out, I'm happy.
Nice find.

Nice coin LD, try wrapping it in wet kitchen foil to get the worst of the muck off and then soak it in lemon juice for 24hrs and clean with a toothbrush.
Electolysis isn't much cop for cleaning silver..

Definatily a Bull Head Shilling...This year 1818.there were alot of counterfits around.and if you were caught counteritting SILVER you were strung up.Apparently forging copper coins your neck was safe, but long prison terms were handed out.....Yours is silver by the way.

well Done there Neil.  nice bullhead too mate,   they are often dated 1818, but now and then 1817 and 1816,
the 1700s was a big time for forging, if they got caught they'd have their hands cut off, ouch,
