Title: Can someone help please !
Post by: 150aceboy on December 24, 2009, 05:28:26 PM
During the 1970's , when the M4 motorway was being built, near Sarn Services, Bridgend, the builders came across a Roman Camp/Burial Ground.

In it they discovered a near complete chariot, skeletons of horses, and many thousands of coins and artifacts.

Speaking some years back to an old fella living near by (ex councillor ), he told me the story, that you could just walk there after they finished work and pick the coins up. I was sceptical at first, but then he showed me a large sweet jar full to the brim of Roman Coins.

The gentleman has now passed on, i've been looking all over the web for a long time now, to see if i could find the story. I know at the time that it was well documented, and my father-in-law, remembers also the kids and neighbours picking coins up all over the place.

I also know that work was halted during this time, and they had to reroute the M4 and put a slight bend in the motorway, as it was at the time a great find...

Does anyone remember the story or have any info to back this up, i would be very grateful, as now i have give up, trying to find any pics or writing about the chariot etc.

Hope this stirs someones memory

Cheers Ace  ;)

you could write a letter to the local newspaper asking for ppl to come forward with their memories, or even suggest to the newspaper that they may want to follow up the story in their 'memories' section.

happy researching!

cheers

You may be talking about the roman camp on the Julia Maritima road, which I think ??? may go to the camp at Loughor.

Found a little bit of info mate     not much to go on though fella...  :-\

History
Prehistoric and Roman
Several burial mounds have been found in the vicinity of Bridgend suggesting that the area was settled before Roman times. The A48 between Bridgend and Cowbridge has a portion, known locally as "Crack Hill", a Roman road. The Vale of Glamorgan would've been a natural low-level route west to the Roman fort/harbour at Neath (Nidum) from settlements in the East like Cardiff and Caerleon (Isca).
