Title: Storm in the 80's
Post by: 1morecoin on October 23, 2009, 10:06:37 AM
Did anyone go detecting on the beaches around here in the 80's after that big storm that stripped all the sand away?

I talked to a man who detected Sker point after that storm and apparently all the sand was stripped away to reveal clay, there were loads of shipwreck silver and gold coins found aswell as Roman coins and a Bronze age axe head.

That must have been some storm to strip 6 to 8 foot of sand away.

There was a lovelly gold hammered coin found down ogmore beach which i think is still on display in the museum.

If anybody remembers detecting the beaches back then I would be very interested in hearing your stories.

Steve.

I remember some of  the beaches being stripped of sand in the 80's in particular Trecco Bay where coins etc were laying on the hard pack and large lengths of steel railway track used to stop aircraft landing on the beaches had been cut off level with sand and just left.
Hence some of the huge signals you get sometimes on the beaches even on Barry Island. If you see small stumps of metal sticking out of the sand at Barry then you know that the sand is off in that area.
Get searching !!!!!!

i remember the storms well, it blew a pylon down by what was called the old point, an old landing stage in llanelli, lots of old coins were found there  mainly french coins 1500  hds onwards, a couple of roman coins also,  its covered over now by a sewerage pipe i think.  mick
