Title: Any ideas ?
Post by: TheLoveDoc on September 29, 2009, 06:49:18 PM
Hi all , I went for a stroll through some woodlands today with the detecter and found a coin. The problem is the detail has been worn away and its not in very good condition at all. On retrieving the coin i noticed a blueish greenish colouration around the coin which i thought makes it bronze or copper. After getting home i put it in some vineger for a little while. After giving it a little rub in my now smelling of vineger sleeve i can see its actually silver in colour but still cant make out any readable markings. Ive tested it with a magnet and it doesnt stick. Is there another way i can tell if its real silver ?

I cant seem to work out how to make my pics smaller to upload as it says my files are too big and doesnt work !
The coin is a little smaller than the old one pennys and a little bigger than a 2 pence.....

L D the coin doesnt look silver. but for silver coins the best way to clen is simply spit on the coin and rub gently with a piece of silver foil. if its silver (as apposed to nickel) it will give off a bad smell, like sulphur.
use clean piece of foil dont forget to rub gently tho (barely the weight of your finger) heat is generated and a chemical reaction will lift the dirt/grime off the coin.
you may need to repeat the process several times. but this is the best and least abrasive way i have found.
remember GENTLY does it

Yeah having cleaned the coin a little more in dirty dish water it seems to be more of a copper bronzish colour now mate but still though its in pretty bad condition.... gutted really i think it would be my oldest coin so far but cant tell. What amazes me though is where I found it ! In the middle of some woods it was .... whats the odds. Thanks for the sulpher tip zorro ..... :)

So nobody can identify it.. shame really but remember that you had the pleasure of finding it and now you have learned more than you knew before so all in all a very good find for you.
