I know that you look at different detecting sites and wonder why can't I find anything nice. A few people go on fields and first time whoopee, they find gold, but 99% of us pick up ring pulls, bottle tops and tons of silver paper. The only answer is a lot of knocking on farm doors to ask for permission and then lots of hours in all weathers with your head down and plodding on. Yes you will occasionally find nice bits of the past, but you will also get blank days by the score. Its a bit like fishing when you don't catch a thing all day and to top it all some bright spark always says something like "You should have been here yesterday" (last week, last month - insert as appropriate), the fish were jumping out of the river straight onto your line, you couldn't go wrong!
