Title: The Odds On Finding Gold On Farmland
Post by: Spooyt Vane on August 24, 2009, 07:42:34 PM
This post  is for I.O.M & Wales detectorists as I think we encouter similar problems  locating gold finds, I have been in
hobby for 35yrs so Iam speaking from experience. I have located 80/100 gold finds mostly from beaches, paths, parks
and  picnic spots, Recently our club as accquired a piece of undetected land near our ancient capital town,  I thihk about 500hrs about  8000/10,000 non ferrous including mostly lead,200/300bronze coins 15/20 silver coins no gold
found but i believe 5/10 gold items are still there.  So my estimation is at least 1 in 10,000 ratio. What do you think.

Its  interesting  at lots of  rallies gold does turns up but 1000s off hrs  are put  in  and 10,000s  iterms dug to achieve that.. Dave like you I have found  only  5/6 gold items of farmland and  I believe there  is gold on most land but you
need luck to find it :) :) :).

I have attended  about  60 rallies with 200/300peeps and over 2/3 days. The gold finds you could count on one hand.
Allan even by your odds 8/i0 signals a hour 3000/3500 holes to be dug maybe over a period maybe of over 2/3yrs
to find a single gold item does not look good. My ratio is much worse. :).

Often its down to there being to much technology between the target and the detector user.
Look at any of the older pre digital I.D. metal detectors, doesn't matter if its Whites, Compass, Garrett etc the meter always had the target I.D.'s dotted around the meter but gold was always a band going virtually acrooss the whole width of the meter.

So use any degree of I.D. and potentially your passing up on gold. Same with discrimination really. Any motion machine used in discriminate mode costs you gold. If you have a old non motion model say a Arado 120 or 130 your detecting everything to the machines depth abilities. Then with any iffy signal or no meter movement at all its up to you to scrape off a few inches of soil and drop the coil down in the hole until a positive reading is obtained. No need for the large hole a motion machine requires because your not motion dependant.

The gold coins below I found after the area was considered cleaned out. Two initial coins had been found but they missed the ones sat amongst or on iron.

I used most detectors over the years and I have used little discrination and digging every iffy signal. I think
only somebody with experience could answer the ratio question. :) :)
