Title: Strapend? An i.d. would be appreciated
Post by: hedgehog on December 13, 2008, 12:41:03 PM
Found this a couple of weeks ago, it's bronze and has two crude fixing holes but I have no idea what it may be or the age of it , looks like some kind of strapend and can't quite make out what the decoration is on it. Any thoughts?

It is certain 1300 - 1400 in age. There should be a frame at the end which should have had a tongue fastener for either leather or cloth.

It is a nice find and should be preserved for future examination.
My infomation came from Chris Marshall's "Buckles Through The Ages" which featured in the January - December 1986 issue. Going back a bit but so is the strapend too. Well done. Put this in the Gallery for others to see, Steve.

Nice find HedgeHog - I think you are spot on - looks like a stap end of some kind to me.

James - who posts on here is pretty good on them. What do you think James?

Title: Hello Steve.

I am sorry about sending that denarius to you but I thought it was yours.
Anyway, I have about 250 artefacts of many descriptions as well as coins. I will eventually put them in the Gallery given the time.

As you know I cannot detect any more, my old legs says enough is enough. I had been detecting since 1972 so I did not have a bad run considering.

I used to go out almost every day when I retired, sometimes with a haversck on my back with my dinner in and kept swinging for 8 hours at a time, no wonder my legs gave up.

As for the Saxon stapend I found that close by a small Roman stopping off point. It was identified by an archaeologist so I have to take his word for it.
Cheers mate.

If we all did it that way Steve the Gallery would not be needed as it would have already been seen. I get you drift here but there is enough space in the Gallery to do that if there is the desire to write about it. Good idea though?

Good find Hedgehog, that's one more than I've found!

I just don't ever seem to find Strap Ends  >:(

Title: This is the only one I have ever found Steve.

Most of those I found are called strapends because that is where they are situated, at the end of a leather belt or cloth. But the recognised ones are like this shown here. It has had harsh treatment in its days. There was still some leather attached inside the two folds.
