Post by: StumbledUpon on July 20, 2009, 07:31:15 PM
Out detecting the beach today, got a couple of rings, this being one, Looks like its been there forever, It was completely covered in green crud! I have read the hallmark to be Chester 1912, but Im probably wrong, ;D Any ideas on how to clean?
thanks. :)

Dont think so Taff, as the hallmark seems to be in order, have'nt had gold tho with crud on before from the sand or soil, I have had quite a few gold rings from the beach with black tarnish, but never crud. Thanks Millsy for the tip! :)

you get the odd ring with a build up of crud if they've been in the sand long enough and the solder weld rot's away. nice looking rings dont bother cleaning them weigh them in now gold is at a good price

That's a nice find Maxine, the ring is 9 carat , so is a mix of mainly gold and copper, the green is the copper being leached out by the action of the salt in the sand!

Thats interesting Hedgehog :) Do you think the ring could now be 18ct now all the copper is gone, ;D ;D ;D I will have it cleaned if my Id is correct, I like to keep all the old ones, and scrap all the modern. thanks all.  :)

Hi Maxine,
Nice find as time goes on and you find more of that age ring many of them will be in that condition if they are 9ct as Hedgehog as mentioned, becareful with it as they tend to be very fragile in that condition if you should drop it they very ofter shatter !! Be warned, keep up the good work.

                                   Pat. ;) ;)

Well found Maxine.

I concur its the age of the ring, salt water and the copper content that has brought the green out. You maybe able to stabilise it as the hallmark looks legit to me. The 9ct is only .375 parts gold so the rest is likely to be copper. Unucual to see one so green though.

Another nice find - well done Maxine. I have only had silver off the beaches this year, but then again I have only made 4 trips.

Cheers
Neil

Here it is cleaned up, very pleased with the result, jeweller confirmed Chester hallmark 1912 , 9ct. I will keep this one as it has survived in the sand all this time.

That is nice Maxine, wonder what he used to clean that

Hi Hedgehog  :) I used a scourer to get most the crud off, then a pin for the harder pieces  ;D The jeweller put it in a ulrasonic machine, and then the polisher, I got the remaining tiny bits out with a pin again and a magnifiying glass.  ;D
