So as not to distract replies to daf vinci,s earlier post can anyone comment on the
sandy beach area behind the planetarium/observatory behind the docklands area of Swansea....as it looks very inviting but is it an original beach? or a made up area.
Has anyone detected there any finds etc? please....ta Paul B. 8)

If im right about the place you mean,then it is quite good.
I dont know wether it is real or man made,but i went there the other day.Within 20 minutes i found fishing weights, cans, modern money.And a really light stone thing,that makes the detector give off a powerful beep.
Unfortunatly,after 20 minutes the heavens opened and it really,really gushed down.

I parked in the small carpark by the dock and the fishing shop,then walked a few hundred yards up the pier then went through on to the beach just after the high rise flats.

I will be going again soon if you are interested.I know that loads of people bathe and lounge around on the beach,so even if there isnt much in the way of old finds there should be plenty of modern stuff.

Not a beach detecting fan though I have heared the left side of the pier out in the bay is good on low tide, musket balls, tokens and the odd hammered.

I might see if i can find some stuff down there 2moz.Some old coins sound pretty enticing!!

you could find some old bottles Too Dav, i did, iv'e got a nice glazed ceramic Jampot circa 1920's from there too,

Hi Paul,
You'll probably only find modern stuff there, especially at the top of the beach where the whole area was dug down to the grey clay by the council when they ran in the new pipe-work for the sewage system a few years ago.
I would say you'd be better off going to Blackpill where you'll see the ballast heaps of stones that the old sailing ships used to dump when coming into Swansea Bay to trade (guess it must have been before there were docks) I guy I knew in the Swansea club (Carl) found a Viking ring brooch from around there.
Other place to try is off Oystermouth which has proved productive for quite a few detectorists. You'll need good wellies for both areas as it can get quite muddy that far out.

thats very helpful....just for info purposes i had a william IV tanner of the sandy area just
past the prison where the bridge (not in use) spans the road.
