Post by: DEUSDAVE on June 20, 2022, 08:24:42 AM
Hi all has anyone any idea what these lead artefacts could be ? they look very like bronze age torques but made of lead they were found on ancient farmland in Denbighshire N.Wales by a detecting buddy of mine using his Equinox 800 any info would be great.

Looks like Bronze Age Macaroni to me LOL. On a serious note I have no idea, although I am not sure lead was even used during the Bronze Age period. Jon.

Lead was used in the bronze age for making jewellery and is very rare also i believe lead was also used to make trial torques before makinng the gold versions and may also have been worn,

You need to practice with your camera, if its a phone tap the screen to focus, also add something to give scale.
Over the many years i have been detecting i have found similar lead objects and others of all shapes and sizes, without any markings or similar items on the database it realy is difficult to say, one thing of note is that very old lead objects tend to be very white with lead oxide.

First I could not get the picture to rotate the right way ,these lead items are white powdery and if you zoom in on the ends on the larger one they are slightly flared out ,I can tell you that the site produced a couple of axeheads some years ago found by workman have to get an expert to take a look but thanks for your input.

Deusdave, with all due respect you asked for peoples opinion, my comment was not about orientation, your photo is out of focus (so i cannot zoom as it gets worse) then as for scale, would it go around you wrist or neck, i have no idea.
As for them looking like a Torc, the PAS dateabase has over 2 million items, if you search for lead Torc you get zero results, If you put in Torc you get 375 hits, they are gold, silver and copper alloy, none are lead. If you search lead bracelet you get 73 of which only one (depending on size) loosely resembles yours, you can look yourself, ref LEIC-6E20C1.
I suggest you show them to your local FLO.
Hope this helps to clear up any misunderstanding.

Much better photos, can now see deposits and the interesting hole in the ends, unfortunatly i cant find anything in the PAS database to match, FLO may have access to someone who can help. Good luck.
