Title: What's This Then.....An Odd Find
Post by: roughneck on July 14, 2020, 10:02:34 PM
Here's a few finds from a known Roman site. Not much to show though for about 5 hours detecting.  Any id on the bronze piece would be nice.  It's 35mm long and 12mm diameter.  I'm sure I can see a face on the head part.  Quite a nice buckle too. (age).  The disc reads Gauge For The Elwell Axes.  Anyone seen one before?  I've got Elwell axe and billhook that I've used over the years.  Great tools.
Cheers and Happy Hunting.  Tom.

It says something like

Cadge for elwell axes

there seem to be a lot of axes of this make on eBay

It might be gauge instead of cadge. Could be a gauge for the blade tip. And I could be completely wrong.

That sounds highly likely :)

I could really do with something like that for my axes :)

Yes it's  a gauge  to get the correct angle when sharpening  a blade, probably  an axe or something  similar.
