Title: Latest Finds
Post by: celticspikey on October 13, 2019, 02:34:27 PM
Hi guys here's a few pieces from a couple of turnip field searches. A nice Sceat of god silver and well struck. A 16-17th cent seal showing a compass design. A La T'enne 111 brooch. A little hammered penny and a half penny, with a debased silver Durotrigan stater. And my favourite a buckle of the late Roman period often found in Saxon graves apparently although not on this steep slope where this came up from.  ;)

You’ve been busy again Paul. :)

I love the hedge-hog sceat, very recognisable. One of the few I recognise anyway.
As soon as I saw the buckle I though, oh Saxon. Wonder if it was s’posed to represent a fox. Lovely. And well found for the others.
One thing’s for sure, I’m not about to find anything. Really stuck at present. All my fields are either grass or maize. They were hoping for a late grass cut, so that’s too long, especially with all the rain we’re having. The maize, of course, is due but the weather has been wrong.
I’ve just brought out my NOX for a dust and top up. Have to turn it on occasionally so I don’t forget how to  ::)
Thanks posting, go start collecting some jaw droppers for posting next time 👍

Apologies.  Looking at Chris Marshall’s guide to Buckles and I see your s is described with Horses Heads. And a nice example it is to.

Again museum class finds, that must be an amazing place/s you have access too. I am not jealous (yes I am) only privileged to see such finds.
Val dig anything on 8; 9 or 10: on the Nox, I had 3 hammereds on today’s rally.

Thanks Greg. There’s been a fair bit of discussion about numbers on the NOX.

It’s something I noticed early on. Odd bits coming up on low numbers you wouldn’t have thought possibly worth digging on previous Minelabs.
They seemed to have clumped more non ferrous into a narrower band on the NOX.
I changed the Tone Break to accommodate because I tend to use my ears more than the screen and I was concerned I might be missing things.
Doesn’t change the fact that the ‘things’ have to be there in the first place  ::)

Fantastic finds once again Paul.  Love the Sceat and the buckle, finds that would grace anybody's collection.  And a huge thank you for the settings you've suggested for the Nox.  Me and Ron are hoping to get out when the rain finally eases.  Perhaps next week.  Please keep unearthing such wonderful finds and posting photos etc.  Cheers.  Tom.

Cracking finds again  - I was talking to a chap who detects Trowbridge way and he was saying what fertile ground it is (although nothing like the old days!).

Are you up to 100 hammies this year yet?

Hi Roland, Most of Wiltshire's soil is kind to coins and artefacts if you can walk over them ;D Do you remember the name of the chap, it could be one of my Trowbridge club members.  ;)

He runs Bullion by Post and is a coin dealer as well - I've got his business card. I bough a miss-labelled siliqua from him - after I pointed out it was a commoner emperor, he said I could have it for the ticket price.......did get a nice Bristol farthing (at least much nicer than any I've found) from him :)
