Title: Think it's a grotty Roman!
Post by: spaceonwhite on August 08, 2019, 07:32:35 PM
Think this is a grotty Roman, found by my old man. Not much to go on but if anyone has any ideas! Cheers

Don’t quote me but I think it’s Trajan

Always nice to find a Roman with something on it. Only two I’ve got look like brass spacers    :-\

Yes, it's a roman.

It's hard to tell from your pictures (if there was anything on the reverse it would certainly help) - but it has a bit of a look of a late 3rd / early 4th century follis such as Maximianus or Galerius or Diocletian., but equally part of me thinks Hadrian.

One thing is for sure - as the portrait has a beard, it's between Hadrian and Galerius.....

Thanks for the help both  :D

I'm seeing my dad on Tuesday and he's said he's managed to get a bit more detail out of it, so will see if I can get another photo of each side and will post up!

Cheers

Hi Probono,

Got these pics off my old man earlier today. They look quite a bit clearer. Do they help with an ID?

Cheers

It's the late 3rd / early 4th century follis.

The reverse would almost certainly be GEN POP ROMANI - although it's a little difficult to work out exactly who it is (they all look the same, it was a deliberate choice).

I think I can see GAL VAL - so Galerius as Caesar and it looks a bit like Trier mint style - there's some drapery on the bust too, so it should be possible to narrow it down further.

Many thanks Probono! Your knowledge on Roman coins never ceases to amaze me  :D I'll also do some research to see if I can narrow it down further. Cheers
