I found what I think is a Lizzy 3 Pence on Monday, mm Portcullis, dated 1566 with Rose.

The closest match from what I can tell is Spink 2565. If correct then either I am reading my book wrong, or it is out of date, or there is a printing error, because it says for that listing Mint Marks 53-92 and date range 1561-1567, but the Portcullis mm is number 107, so why don't they list that mm with that Spink number?

Any ideas? Will try and post a pic in a few days, just 'cleaned' it a few minutes ago.

Jon - I was very confused by this in Spink until I got my head around it.

The numbering of mintmarks in Spink, I believe, is in order of when they were first used, often in previous reigns.

The order used in each reign is shown on the first page for each monarch.

The numbering and dates of the mintmarks for Spink 2565 is 53 to 92:

Pheon (53) 1561-65
Rose (33) 1565
Portcullis (107) 1566
Lion (92) 1566-67

Thanks for explaining that Doc, it makes sense now that you said that, although if I had produced the book myself I would have put it differently. It isn't very easy to understand. Thanks again.

Here is the coin I found.

You will notice one side is black in colour, the other side silver in colour. That is because the coin was lying flat and so the black side was facing upwards and the silver side downwards. If the coin had been the opposite way round I believe the bust side would have been in very good condition and the shield side would have worn away to some extent.

This was found on pasture. As soon as I lifted the plug I just new it was something good, the underside of the plug had black silver remains. And from past experience the colour was 'old'.

Actually thinking about it now, I think I have got a Lizzy 1/- , 6d, 4d, 3d, 2d, 1d. I need to find a higher now :) Perhaps something yellow. Maybe I will take a picture of all of them side by side when I have time.

Nice find - my first hammered was one of these, so whilst they are smallish they still bring a smile :)

I've not found any Lizzies smaller than a 3d though, so it would be nice to find half groats and smaller - if it helps I've found two Lizzie shillings - both the same mm, but different busts.

Thanks Doc for the explanation of the numbers - in the back of Spink they are shown in order (at least they were in the older volumes). but I did wonder how they chose that order.

This is my Lizzy haul over the years. I haven't looked at them together in many many years. It's quite nice to see, it's like a mini hoard :)

Sorry the pics aren't great. You can see the sizes next to one another, they are left to right: 1/-, 6d, 6d, 4d, 3d, 2d, 2d, 2d, 1d, 1d, 1d.

I think the last three are pennies?

A spot the error game now on the Lizzy Shilling. Can you see the error?

I'll have to put the ones I have together at some point - I need to get one of them back from the flo first though.

I am not sure this is the case, I believe most of the wear occurs during use, I cannot see that much would change in the ground, (depending on normal ph levels) after all silver takes a long time to oxidise, and even this oxidisation would be even over each side of the coin, not tending to flatten one side, the top would be darker as it is the wetter side. My opinion, not scientific 🧪 no evidence.
I would be more than pleased with it in any condition, well done.
