Title: A couple of days out on a new permission some interesting bits
Post by: BeachHunter101 on January 22, 2019, 03:44:25 PM
All of the finds were found in a small area of the field, does anyone know what the strange lead item is that looks like a jack gaming piece? it was found next to all the musket balls. The lions head has pieces of iron on the back of it, I've looked online and some people think they're roman but were I found it as far as I know no roman activity has been found in the area. The buckle with the leather still attached looks to have been burnt. Also about 20 pewter buttons have been found on the same field (not pictured)
any info will be much appreciated ;D 8)

Hi BeachHunter101,

I've found a very similar lead piece which I've added an image. It was identified to me as being an archer bow counterweight though I can't be certain that's exactly what it is!

OK You asked for it so here goes.
Pic No 1. The collection. Most of the buckles are harness related.
Pic no. 2 &3 Lions Head. Looks like it’s been mounted, maybe a decorative piece. Notoriously hard to date but prob. 1700’s - 1800’s
Pic 4 - 6.  Gaming piece.dont think so as as it’s got a broken arm and looks like iron
Pic 7 & 8. Vicky 3 pence. Very nice.
Pic 9. Georgian shoe buckle, workers price range.
Pic 10. A mis-Shapen musket ball
Pic 11. A nice Cardiff bag seal. Contents ?
Pic no.12. A nice button, can’t see what’s printed on it but you could do a google to find the maker.
Pic no.13. Broken nut cracker
Pic 14. Nice Edward penny, love the green.
Pic no.15. Used musket ball, must have hit a wall !
Pic no. 16. Harness buckle.

Would say finds range from George 3rd through to Edward 7th. A very successful outing, well done. Worth another going over, must be some more goodies in there.👍

No 10 looks like a Brenneke slug for a shotgun to me, you don't see many here as they're designed for shooting larger game such as wild boar.

I think we all get those strange lead shapes from time to time :) - everytime someone posts one there is a discussion, but I can't remember ever getting to a consensus. I could imagine that if you cast musket balls as a group, you might get a sprue like this - except that the ends of the 'jack' always look flat, whereas if the musket balls had been cut off then there would have been a pinch -two flat surfaces with a ridge in the middle.

Like the lion's head - it's always good to look at lead things - I wonder how many have been thrown out in the past - a few years ago I found a lump of lead with a strange pattern on it - which was some inset metalwork. Turned out it was a Viking weight - the metal work being earlier 'celtic' enameled bronzework robbed from somewhere and cut up. Pity they've built houses on the land now - I only ever got to go to that field once......

Thank you very much for the replies.  Yes I can imagine how many amazing lead artefacts have been thrown away  :o The lions head was caked in mud, I was very surprised when I washed it and seen the face  ;D - Wow that would be an amazing thing to find, I can only imagine how many things are under the houses waiting to be discovered.

Thank you Ron,
Yes the fields are very interesting, plenty of old buildings around, Can't wait to see what else is there  8) ;D
