Pulled up this beast yesterday morning. The axe head looks to have some age but I haven't been able to work out how old yet. If anyone has any ideas/knowledge, let me know! Cheers

There’s loads on t’iternet about axes. Would you believe there’s even a forum for collectors. ! ?
Looked at hundreds and didnt see one the same as that. Some with the same chopping shape but none with such a long handle socket. So, I reckon it might be a one off and probably late 1700’s to early 1900’s
Iron is almost impossible to put an age to because of all the variables. Reminds me of the Iron Age spear point I found that turned out to be a Victorian railing spike.  ;D

It does look like a golf club lol but definitely too big and heavy  ;D

Thanks for your thoughts Val. Yeah I spent quite some time looking at examples across the internet but nothing matched so you could well be right!

There's still a tiny bit of wood from the handle on the axe head. Maybe carbon dating lol  :D

Just had the following note from the FLO:

"I think it is a carpenters axe, these come in a variety of forms depending on what you would like to do with the wood, this example looks to be hand forged so I agree it does look to have some age. I have been able to finds some later 18th-19th century examples but suspect that 16-17th century would be more likely."

Date wasn’t far off then, great. Nice to see something like that lasting so long. Well found 👍
