Title: Coin with stamped initials Post by: spaceonwhite on December 09, 2018, 07:13:34 PM Found this fairly unexciting coin today, except for the fact it has the initials JH stamped onto it. I’ve never come across this with any of my coins before. Does anyone have any idea why it would have been stamped like this?

I can only assume when gone past there usefulness as a coin might have been stamped to use as a local token but thats just a guess. Sometimes I think that it's that someone got a punch set for Christmas and was trying it out :)

I’ve found A French Peals soap stamped advertising coin before but thought it was illegal to stamp/deface British coinage. Weren't all the Georgian and early Victorian coins demonetised in 1860 ? Could explain why any not cashed in were used like this, gaming counters ?
