Post by: Andre on November 15, 2018, 08:26:08 PM
hey up,how are you all doing?
Been detecting today and found a couple of nice things, bit of old money, a bag full of lead, etc.
What is the little figurine on the little medal?

That’s an interesting find Andre. Is it glas or metal ?
It looks like an intaglio. Maybe from a pendant or brooch. Try cleaning it up a bit more. Nice find.
I think the lead horse was probably a child’s toy circa late 1800/1900’s.
Unbelievable that children actually played with lead. It’s a wonder were here to talk about it.

Cheers,it’s metal, probably copper or brass, the permission is opposite some old roman potteries, but I’ve never found anything roman there before.
As for the horse as I was washing it,with stuff was coming out of it,very toxic metal

Nice finds. At first glance, the figure looks to be in some sort of East Asian dance pose???

I thought, dancing man but there appears to be some bits missing!  ::)

It’s on his head Chris  ::)

If it’s metal its not going to be an intaglio, more likely some sort of seal insert.
I spent a couple of hours, on and off, looking for something similar. No joy.

Apparently the dancing man turns up quite frequently and is well noted; I even have an old Billy Butlin lapel pin with a dancing man on it but my dancing man is fully clothed and waving a straw boater. I noticed the item on his head but had wondered if it was a hang man's noose and we were looking at a hanging man?

That set bells ringing Chris. Isn’t that where the dancing man first came to be. A hanging man dancing on the end of a rope !
Strange thing to have, wether it’s an intaglio or a seal or simply a pendant insert.
I wonder if there’s a connection to some late Georgian Buttons I’ve seen with strange impressions.

On an other detecting site, that shall remain nameless, there was a dancing stick man scratched onto a George III silver coin that promoted considerable debate; you probably saw it.

when i first saw it it looked like a frog, then a cherub, like a little child.
The permission is opposite Roman sites, first time on it,never been detected, did a few zig zags over it because its with winter corn now so basically i  went over the tractor tracks.
I've got similar permissions with stubble or drilled near by but we are having problems with some night hawks,on all the land, more than one person and with dogs, probably staffies.
The farmer is getting a bit cheesed off with this detecting lark,so he might stop the detecting all together....
gates were left open,i was covering holes that they made,a mess.
i waited for months for those fields because they had spuds on them,so as soon as the spuds were out they were there overnight.
God knows what they found,on the previous year i've found surface hammered coins so with the plough going so deep i bet
it lifted a lot of old material.
Does anyone have similar problems with hawkers?

Not on my fields but if you look at my other post you’ll see why there’s a lot of concern about them.
Now the words got out it won’t be long before they find out where it is.
