That's an amazing find! The roman coins look like mainly or all Siliqua 4th century. I am not saying I am right but I am wondering if this is a Saxon hoard utilising Roman Silver coins!?

They are all siliqua - I can see at least one Arcadius - and I think the unclipped one might be Theodosius - most of them being clipped would suggest a post 'roman withdrawl' date - so early(ish) 5th century - it would be regarded as sub-roman rather than saxon as the saxons didn't get everywhere straight away.

There's a reasonably amount of hack silver at the end of the roman period too - in fact I have a very small hack silver hoard going through TT now (there's two bits in it, and the discussion at the museum was whether it was roman or viking. I think they are going with late roman (it was from next to a romano-british farmstead), even though there has been some viking stuff in the vicinity (a lead / bronze weight).

Oh yes, I meant to ask, do you have a better picture of your second picture, second row, the 1st and 4th item. The 1st looks interesting!!

Thanks for posting those two pictures Steve, very interesting! Apart from the date of the coins I am convinced that the date to its deposit will be linked in to these two items, especially the Ram object. Was there any pottery about when you found all of it?

I received a copy of letter sent by Ben Jones flo to Shropshire coroner today, The hoard consists of 252 objects including 56 coins a penannular broach and a quantity of hack silver of various sizes. I was amazed at total number of finds

Now I know where my congratulations went !  I clicked the ‘spell check’ and I’ve just done it again. SO (abridged version)

Fantastic finds Steve. You must still be feeling a warm glow every time you think about it.
Hope all goes well at the inquest.  ;D
