Title: On the Hammered
Post by: celticspikey on September 29, 2018, 10:21:27 AM
Hi guys and girls, It's been a while. I have had several short trips on a 50 acre field backing on to an early medieval site. It has a track running alongside it which is probably why the hammies have been popping up. 2 bits of gold has surfaced one being a part medieval ring brooch which is gilded but unfortunately missing the largest part but it gives me something to search for in the future. The other is a small mount of sorts which as you can see has 3 small holes for attachment may be to leather ? This could be early medieval or maybe Saxon I'm not sure yet (Any thoughts)  A nice surprise was the Groat and also the Short cross penny. The coin weight is for a gold Noble and the nail cleaner looks Roman.
In the distance on another farm I could see the farmer starting to roll and seed some fields I have been waiting to get on so hopefully more bits to come in time.

I know Peter, it would have been a good size, I guess even if I find the rest most probably the pin will be missing.

You should start doing videos - I've been watching quite a few recently and enjoy it when something other than a viccy penny comes up :)

That's a nice lot of stuff - wonder if the blue stone is a proper sapphire - it's a lovely colour.

Once again Paul, some wonderful finds. I love the casual way you mention the hammered coins. Like confetti, they just float your way.
Shame about the brooch though, it would have been something special if complete. I imagine the sapphire is genuine, it’s a lovely colour.
Amazing the plough didn’t get a bite out of the groat. Its great to see one that good.
Looking forward to seeing what comes up when you get onto those other fields.
Well found.

I too watch some of the more interesting videos Roland. I have thought about doing a video but not sure the best way of doing it.
It would be good article to cover in the searcher ie best cameras to use, do you chest mount or head mount camera sound etc. I will look in to it.
I will get stone checked to see if it's a sapphire, I was thinking as its gilded it mite not be but I guess it could be.  ;)

My boy is always trying to get me to do detecting videos, but I wonder how many ring pulls and cow tubes people would want to see :)

There seems to be a whole raft of ways to film - and camera options - I haven't investigated what people use too much at the moment - need some good land first!

I agree on the idea for the Searcher.
