Title: Out Again Yesterday
Post by: roughneck on August 26, 2018, 12:40:15 PM
Hi Folks
Me and Ron made what seems like another pilgrimage yesterday.  A long journey, but we always find something of interest.
The weather was good so we made the most of it and marched up and down the fields all day, only stopping for refreshments at lunch time and to visit the landowners, who were not at home. So we left a box of finds from previous searches and a bespoke spalted beech table lamp, turned on my lathe at home, hanging from the door knob .  Both me and Ron are hobbyist woodturners, making bowls, lamps and wooden round things!!  We had a few interesting finds, especially the Roman Chicken brooch (AD 100-200), a couple of nice Roman copper alloy coins, a what I think is a Charles 1st sixpence, a German token, a William 3rd halfpenny and some bits and pieces.  Ron also had a lovely big crotal bell.  The biggest one we've had so far.  Once again a good and exhausting day, then home to rest our weary bodies and reflect on the days adventure.  And we've got our eye on lots of Sloes in readiness to make some tasty Sloe Gin.  yum! yum!

Cheers and Happy Digging!!   Tom

Like the chicken brooch. Since we got some chickens, we seem to have more chicken related items in our house (used to get a lot of cat related items).

I'd agree on the Chas I sixpence as the VI is to the right of the monarch.

So what happened to the cat Roly?  The chicken brooch is different and nice to find.  We have found coins and artefacts of all ages from the same field. Thanks for confirmation on the poor Charles 1st sixpence.  Cheers.  Tom

We still have a cat, it's just we have three chickens as well, so people have switched to chicken-based cards / gifts......

I was wondering if my new glasses were distorting things for a bit there Ron.

What a cracking crotal Bell, lovely. The long thingy looks like a skillet handle and what is the thing that looks like a short handled striped spanner ?

Some very nice finds, again.

Thanks everyone.  We appreciate all the feedback.  As you said Paul, we are very fortunate to have productive and varied land where we have the possibility to unearth finds from all eras.  Going to try new ground next weekend,  Fingers crossed!!
Cheers and Happy Digging!!  Tom and Ron.

Nicest selection of finds I have seen for a long time. Well searched guys ..
A crotial bell is at the top of my wish list,,,, haven't come close to finding one. And to find one like that would be a gem.
Cracking find.
