Title: We've Been Out Again
Post by: roughneck on August 19, 2018, 07:50:40 PM
Me and Ron made a return visit to the ploughed field that we detected over last week.  Within ten minutes of setting our Deus's on high sensitivity and 18Khz I had a dig-me, don't dig-me signal.  I'm glad I decided to dig as I unearthed what I think is a lovely silver Saxon Sceatta..
We had lots of mixed signals which just had to be dug, most of them turned out to be rubbish, bits of lead, tin, copper etc.
After lunch we headed back into the same field where we unearthed 3 silver Hammies, a Rose farthing, a couple of thimbles, a spindle whorl, 6 Roman grots, a few Georgie coppers, a couple of belt mounts and what looks like a zoomorphic dog?
Not a bad day by anyones standards, we were pleased, aching and utterly exhausted by the time we headed for home.  But hey-ho!!!  We'll probably do it again next week....... if we can get rid of the aches and pains.
Cheers and Happy Digging everyone!!!!   Tom.

Great finds. The dog may be part of a Roman folding knife handle. This sort of thing:

Very nice (again).

I was out yesterday in Gloucestershire, but I found nothing. I've not found any hotspots there yet - despite there being a roman villa and a roman road......one day.

Cheers guys and spot on Doc with your description for the dog.  It has the slot between it's front and back feet for the knife blade to fit in. Very interesting find and a first for us!
Just a matter of time for you Roly, Gloucestershire is a great area to search.  You ought to give me and Lucky Ron a shout and we can help find a hot spot for you?
Cheers and Happy Digging!!!  Tom

Well what can I say but WOW. You and Ron may have come to Detecting late but you’re sure making up for it.
Some more great finds, especially the sceat. You’ve been so lucky finding an excellent detecting site.

Keep them coming, gives us something to dream about  ::)

Across the border is the place to go for decent finds nowadays and well worth the effort I see. Just don’t find some of this stuff in over detected South Wales. Great stuff. Will be off to my England farm soon.  :) Nice post chaps.

My comment was that I went over the border to what should be a good area and found nothing! I managed to find a James shilling just yesterday just outside Cardiff  - although of course I won't be finding much saxon over here! :)
