Title: After The Harvest
Post by: roughneck on August 11, 2018, 10:11:10 PM
Hi Folks
Me and Ron had a day out yesterday, our first since the warm weather started. (It's been a few months)
Crops are being harvested and fields are under the plough, just what we need!
We headed east before the morning rush hour and decided to detect over a field that had just been ploughed after the rape seed was gathered.  We've done this field before and it always turns up something of interest for us.  This time it gave up four and half silver coins, a few grotty Romans and lots of bits and pieces.  We think two of the small silvers may be Saxon and the other two and half are hammies.  Two Saxons in one day???  Id on all of them would be nice.  We did have one soaking before we headed for home around 3pm and then we got stuck in traffic where a caravan had turned over on the motorway.  We'll probably visit the field again before it's planted with a new winter crop. Ron will post photos of the Saxons after light cleaning.
Cheers and Happy Digging everyone.  Tom.

Put us all to shame, again, Tom. Some really good finds. I see there’s an Edward, the 2nd, I think but can’t see the other hammies well enough.
I do question the smaller of the 2 Saxon coins. I’ve never seen one like it. The other one is listed on the Colchester Treasure site.
I’m intrigued by the ‘pepper’ shaped thingy, what do you think it is ?
All in all another good day for you both. Well done, keep them coming.

Ron, I found one very similar with the 4 round patterns. Not the same on the reverse though. But I think close enough that there has to be a connection. If you’d like to have a look go to,  anglosaxoncoins.homestead.com
Page 2  thier number S59. No monarch but date of 710-60. Spink no.801.
That one is marked as Very Rare.
