Title: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: spaceonwhite on July 28, 2018, 12:13:27 PM Managed to get out for a few hours this morning whilst dodging the rain showers!
Need help identifying the hammered coin and also found what looks to be a small toy, possibly a knight/soldier. Looks old but any help of identifying the age would be great. Thanks! :) Title: Re: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: Val Beechey on July 28, 2018, 02:01:03 PM I was going to say the toy was a Yeoman of the Guard, and could be but not wearing today’s uniform.
The coin is an Edward. No idea which one though. Title: Re: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: spaceonwhite on July 29, 2018, 07:57:51 AM Hi Val. Yeah the shape of the clothing matches a Yeoman but the pattern doesn't. Can't find anything on google ???
I thought the coin was an Edward too but again, I'm not sure which one either! Title: Re: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: spaceonwhite on July 29, 2018, 08:04:37 AM The coin also looks like it's been struck twice to form a cross over the kings face. Has anyone ever come across this before?
Title: Re: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: Val Beechey on July 29, 2018, 08:32:04 AM I saw a reference recently to the strike of another Edward coin that had a ‘ghost’ of the cross showing through to the other side.
Probono is probably the one to give answers if he sees it or Dale, he’s pretty good with hammered coins. Title: Re: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: The Doc on July 29, 2018, 12:50:34 PM Interesting coin. It's a Henry V penny, York mint, with mullet and trefoil by crown and an annulet in one quarter of the reverse and also after 'TAS'. A variation of Spink 1788 or 1790.
The ghosting of the cross showing through on the obverse is not hugely unusual, but is quite striking when heavy. Title: Re: Help identifying coin and old toy Post by: spaceonwhite on July 29, 2018, 07:53:17 PM Thanks for the ID Doc :)
That's interesting on the ghosting. First time I've seen it on one of my hammered! |
