Title: Update on the Brooch
Post by: BeachHunter101 on July 20, 2018, 05:19:46 PM
I bought a tool to clean it and this is the result. Has anybody got any idea what it could be and how old? it has some strange markings which look to be broad arrows either side? ??? it is quite heavy maybe its made out of bronze? it looks like it had a pin earlier on in life. Any info will be much appreciated ;D

I hate giving up on identifying anything. Even if I get it wrong, which I often do ! But with this one I’m stumped. It could, quit possibly be a brooch. I’ve seen some plate brooches that look similar on the back where the attachments are broken off but nothing quite the same. There are so many variants, you wouldn’t believe. Also it could be a locally reproduced variant, which would be more unique.
Unless anyone else can come up with any ideas, I’d suggest you get in touch with your local PAS man/lady.
Also I’m not convinced it’s bronze. I’d say probably copper alloy. Best of luck, it’s an interesting find.

Could it be a mount? If it was a brooch I'd expect to see a catch plate cast to it.
The fixing point or pin was also made of iron causing the rust marks.

Thank you for the brilliant info Val, I will definitely email the PAS and see what they say  :) it's an interesting one for sure  ;D

Thank you Dale, It could possibly be a mount, If it is a mount how old do you think it is?  :)
