Title: Pasture Finds Post by: celticspikey on July 04, 2018, 01:19:50 PM Hi guys, despite this searing heat and lack of fields, I did manage to notice one of my pasture fields had been cut next to a medieval field. Desperate measures and all that I thought I would give it a go over a couple of visits searching for about 6 hrs in total. This field has dwelling platforms noticable and a bit humpy bumpy, and as it was next to a small river was surprisingly easy to dig and relay divot, it also has evidence of black soil a sure sign of ancient habitation.
Any way the finds are as follow. (1) A beehive thimble in great condition and of 1350-1450 date (2) This was deeper than the pinpointer around 12" and a good signal it is Bell shape used for horses and sheep and dates around 18th-19th Cent. (3) A nice surprise and also from a good depth is a Roman Dupondius and has been drilled and worn, probably by a Saxon or at least in the medieval period. (4) Is the group shot. (5) A nice little strap end or hook of early medieval date I feel. (6) A nice little single loop strap clasp 1300-1450 AD. (7) some sort of belt decoration mount unfortunately the ends missing but nice all the same, not sure of date open to offers. (8) some sort of strainer also unsure of date. More time needed in this field as I am sure something quite special will come up just a sixth sense I have, time will tell. ;).....Hope you enjoy these little finds during the detectorists quiet part of the season......Crops will be starting to come off soon and then the finds will flood in on DW... ;D :D Title: Re: Pasture Finds Post by: jaydogg on July 04, 2018, 01:41:31 PM A brilliant selection of finds, and in such great condition too. As for the others, well what can I say, jammy ! B ;) nowhere to go and you manage to drop on a Medieval utopia. Lovely finds again, well done on making the effort. I haven’t been out for 3 weeks. To be fair this pasture is rite next to my best medieval field so it should produce that said its not always the case as you know. 12th cent Church, alone and unloved (as in falling down) in the middle of an isolated field. What did I find ? Couple of pre decimal coppers and half a crown. Mind you that was early on in my Detecting life and I only had a Viking Detector. Could be worth another sneak around with the NOX ::) Best of luck tomorrow. Less damaged finds in my book and arguably in context of where they were lost!

Have a look on the Bay item no. 132683078798 Advertised , British Army Buff Leather Brass Belt Hook Sliders. Dated 1816 - 1913 The buckle part seems to be the same but there’s no extension. Being sold by MontysMilitaria. The above finishes in just over 8 hours so it might be listed as ‘Sold’ or ‘Finished’ John said the same as Neil about the ‘rose’ if it’s small, it could be the top off a pepper pot ! I’ve always thought that was a stupid way of dating anything.
I don’t remember seeing anything to suggest other buildings and nothing shows on LIDAR. old maps and reference material only mention the church and a Bronze Age enclosure. There is a track, through a farm, but detecting gear would raise alarm bells and when I asked, I got a no. The back way to it is all up hill via a sream bed and old path. Don’t think I could manage it now. Over the years I’ve found some very interesting and potentially good sites, BUT ! S’pose we can all say that :'( |
