Title: Hammered Gold Post by: jaydogg on June 11, 2018, 04:45:58 PM Found this a while ago, my first hammered gold coin (I’ve only been waiting fifteen years). It is an Edward III half noble; I believe it to be pre treaty but not 100%. I am being lazy but perhaps one of the usual numismatist suspects on here can offer a more detailed id? Enjoy folks.

I've saved them, but the pertinent details are a bit pixelated.
I found these hard to work out clearly when I had to - crucial details are things like what is at the corners of the central panel on the reverse - I can't see that clearly with these images. I'm also trying to make sense of the obverse legend (I can match the reverse legend fine) - it seems to end in Hyb - which suggests perhaps either transitional treaty or even (although these hould end in AQT) the treaty period - especially with the annulet before EDWARD - although this can happen in Pre-treaty too. This one I believe is pre-treaty series E (broken letters both sides). Apologize for the poor colour - if I knew where my tablet was (or it was daylight) I'd get some better images...... Yours is North 1239 (mine is North 1238) obv: EDWARD DEI G REX ANGL D HYB Z AQT annulet before Edward (the AQ / T is above the king's head). London, Spink 1503, dating to 1361-9 Nice coin :) Title: Re: Hammered Gold Post by: probono on June 12, 2018, 10:03:24 PM I forgot to say that if you look closely at the lower half of your reverse, you can see lines running from the points of the arches towards the centre of the coin - there are some on my example too - I think that they are to help lay out the coin properly - nice detail
