Title: Any ideas anyone?
Post by: rainyday on June 07, 2018, 05:37:16 PM
I was out on Sunday and found a few bits, amongst it was this, it weighs one and a half pounds and has the same indents on both sides, I’m pretty sure it’s lead, if nothing else the wife had a new door stop!

It could be lead smelt. There were quite a few lead mines in Wales way back. The Romans in particular were here for that and silver.
The impressions could be were they’ve been dragged out of the smelter. Like iron I think it was produced in small quantities by any family that had access to the ore.
I have a bloomery piece of iron. Gave a wiered signal, not like usual you’d expect and it’s not magnetic.

I found a very similar item last year, suggestions ranged from palm guard to a holy water portable font.
Will try to post on my return from hols.
