Title: Day Out In The Sun
Post by: roughneck on April 19, 2018, 08:47:27 PM
Me and Ron had a day out in the sun today as we are unable to go on the weekend.  It was the second visit to one of our new permissions and a new field.  Plenty of signals produced lots of lead fragments, 25 musket balls, 15 pennies, halfpennies and a couple of farthings, (which we gave to the estate managers children),  2 Vicky silver sixpences, a Geo 6th shilling and a nice silver hammered for me.  Id on the hammy please if possible.
Thirsty and weary we ended the day dragging our feet as wellies are definitely not the footwear on warm, dry days. Bags full of lead and the usual scrap we finally made it back to the car to rehydrate.  Anyone want some musket balls?
Cheers and Happy Digging !!!  Tom.

Good day out boys. The hammered is a Henry vi groat/halfgroat depending on size  annulet issue 1422 _ 1430.  Calais mint.

Looks like another good days digging there Tom. Does the Farmer pay you by the hour ?  ;D
Lovely coin though, fair play. You deserved it.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Perfect ID on the Henry, much appreciated.  If the farmers did pay us by the hour, we'd be worth a small fortune Val.
Me and Ron are thinking about letting go of our hammies (around 40) in a few weeks time.  Anyone know the best way to sell them as a whole, individually, or in lots?  We don't know the id of many of them.  Cheers.  Tom.

Well, there are many ways - you could always PM me :) (I'm interested in the testoon btw!).

Higher value coins could be sold at auction, but then you might have between ~5 and 20% seller's commision - it might give you a higher over all return, but depends - lower value items would be grouped as lots - but that might not be as effective as selling them individually on eBay (but you would still lose around 15% after fees and paypal).

Then there are dealers - they do have overheads, and want to make a return - don't expect top dollar that way.

Otherwise if you know collectors they will generally pay higher prices - but it depends on what it is - they don't want to pay too much, and identified coins usually go for a bit more than unidentified ones - that's pretty much how I make any money on eBay myself - usually where I buy a lot, keep the ones I want for my collection(s) and then sell the others.

A great day out again guys, either a little skirmish or practicing with the musket balls. Good touch keeping the estate manager on side Tom. Roland gave good advice as usual. I wouldn't go down dealers route personally they obviously have a big markup and whether you could rely on a dealer informing you there is a rare or unusual one amongst the lot I doubt it lol. try and get them I'D first.....Popping my Hammy up soon, see what you think... ;) Good luck guys.
