Title: Roman Dolphin or wishful thinking?! Post by: spaceonwhite on April 01, 2018, 02:33:13 PM Found this object in a field today where I've found other Roman items and coins nearby. It resembles a dolphin at the rear, although the head looks more like a lion but I'm not sure if I'm just seeing things in a lump of trash!!! ???

Or was it actually used like that, I wouldn't have thought so but then I don't know?

Post by: Greg on April 02, 2018, 12:13:29 PM I have found some of these made of iron on shipwrecks during my diving days, as spaceonwhite says they are fired from cannon, they spin end on end into the sails of the opposing ships tearing the sails and slowing them down to be taken as a prize. They where much larger than the one illustrated say 100mm in diameter.
As for one shown, I can only think it would ricochet of harder surfaces causing multiple damage. Maybe.🤔 |
