Title: Finds from Sunday and Tuesday.
Post by: roughneck on March 28, 2018, 01:36:19 PM
Hi Folks
Following on from Rons post I have added my finds photos and a few from yesterday, as I had an opportunity to visit the same estate again. It gave me a chance to speak to another landowner who has also given me permission on his farm (1000 acres).
Sunday was amazing on a newly ploughed field that we know holds Roman coins (and lots of nails), we found our new record for Roman coins, 28 in total.  We gridded all day until my coil died.  I think I need a new battery in my Deus coil.  Please Roly some Id's, and it would be nice if anyone could tell me about the small brooch.
Then I had the chance to visit the farm again yesterday and search a different field which is pasture.  Some nice finds once again and including the modern money I had ten silvers.  The two hammies (Id's please) and the two Williams were nice surprises. Two good days again on this estate, I wonder how many more we can have?  We can't always be so lucky!!!

I think the coin with the rose and crown is James 1st
The little ‘brooch’ could be an early Boy Scout badge but looks a bit like a Fleur De Lys.
Once again some fantastic finds Tom.

I stand corrected Dale you’re right. Teach me to look at both sides next time  :-[

That testoon is quite a scarce coin - it's the last, more debased issue - It's still worth around £150-£200 even in that condition (based on what I paid for mine).

Nice - hopefully it wasn't from my new permission over that way that is 1000 acres :)

The silver roman is a denarius of Maximinus Thrax (235-238) - the rest of the romans this time date from house of Constantine c. 320 - to house of Valentinian (c. 370AD).

Excellent Dale and Roly, some great info. And thank you too Val, always nice to receive some good feedback.  The Testoon, the Philip and Mary and the two Williams were all found in the same area and the Romans in a different field.  Good luck on your new permission Roly.  Look after it, it's difficult to find some decent land.   Cheers and Happy Digging!!  Tom.

Yes - just have to find some time to get to it - there's a ploughed out roman villa in the park land with a roman road near it, so hoping for at least a few. I've known the owner's nephew for eleven years and we've been talking about this for about five years now. Just have to get my permission from my friend from uni now :) I've only known him for 25 years, and he hasn't said yes yet!

You may need to twist his arm slightly Roly.  But if you are direct and polite it usually works for a YES or NO.!!
Good Luck!!!  Tom
