Title: Clean it? Post by: N8 on March 09, 2018, 09:24:22 PM Found this 1797 'cart-wheel' Georgian penny. Its a bit worn, but was wondering it I should clean it or leave it be. Not sure what the metal is so any suggestions welcome

There were millions of these struck, so - in my opinion - it's a bit up to you. With some of these I've given them a very light sand - with a fine grit - in that way you smooth the surfaces out a bit - if you were to clean it with an acid you would leave a worse surface - I've not had one of these that I have cleaned with acid that have ever looked much better - although I usually only clean these this way if they are heavily verdigrised. Some would suggest that you should not clean - for something like this, which is not in collectible condition use your judgement. Title: Re: Clean it? Its one of my first coins that wasn't an elizabethan penny so although its worthless i quite like it. I'll probably leave it as is if theres a good chance it'll get worse Cheers |
