Title: Clean it?
Post by: N8 on March 09, 2018, 09:24:22 PM
Found this 1797 'cart-wheel' Georgian penny. Its a bit worn, but was wondering it I should clean it or leave it be. Not sure what the metal is so any suggestions welcome
Cheers

The metal is pure copper.

There were millions of these struck, so - in my opinion - it's a bit up to you.

With some of these I've given them a very light sand - with a fine grit - in that way you smooth the surfaces out a bit - if you were to clean it with an acid you would leave a worse surface - I've not had one of these that I have cleaned with acid that have ever looked much better - although I usually only clean these this way if they are heavily verdigrised.

Some would suggest that you should not clean - for something like this, which is not in collectible condition use your judgement.

Thanks for the input Probono,
Its one of my first coins that wasn't an elizabethan penny so although its worthless i quite like it. I'll probably leave it as is if theres a good chance it'll get worse
Cheers
