Title: We've Been Out
Post by: roughneck on January 29, 2018, 06:32:18 PM
Once again, me and Ron headed for the fields.  The weather yesterday wasn't as forecast but we dressed for the dampness and managed a few finds for our efforts.  We started detecting in a field which is bordered by a tumulus.......to our dismay, nothing except bullet cases and shotties so we headed to a paddock where we've had a few finds previously.  What a difference!! The copper alloy Romans started to show themselves alongside some lead, a watch winder, a few pennies, a spindle whorl and more bullet cases and shotties.  We ended a long day with thirteen Roman coins and when Ron wiped the mud off his selection in readiness for a photo he noticed a glint of silver.  Further cleaning showed it to be a nice conditioned silver Denarius.  That really turned a good day into an even better one.  Happy and knackered, we headed for home.  It was dark when we left home and dark when we returned home, close on thirteen hours later.  My back and hip is feeling it today.
I'm sure it'll be good again by the time we head out again.  Happy Digging Everyone!!!  Cheers.  Tom and Ron.

Been waiting for you guys to appear.  ;) well looks like you pulled it off again, that's a good session by any standards Tom. I have a field boarded by a tumulus, just 303s for me aswell, persevere guys the Celts and Romand loved the ancient buarial grounds next time you never know. That Denarius is a belter and looks like lovely silver.
I'm out tomorrow see if I can keep up with you guys.... ;)

Cheers Paul.  Good luck, it's your turn tomorrow.  We're all waiting in anticipation to see what wonderful finds you'll once again post on the forum.
And as for keeping up with us ? lol.  We and most other detectorists can only dream of unearthing finds as good as the ones you show in your posts.   Happy Digging!!  Tom.

Great find, great condition, well found.

That’s something I’d have liked to find. ‘Sigh’

Nice coins again - the Ant Pius dates to 155-156AD - it must have been dropped pretty soon after that I think :)

The others are mainly 4th century, although you have a few from the 270s - the latest is house of Valentinian so around 370AD.

As one who's only Roman is a real grot, no better than a badly worn bronze disc, I look at that lovely silver coin and feel a real sense of envy. There must have been wonderful feeling of being something of a time traveller as you cleaned it up and saw the face of the famous Roman looking back at you.

You guys are not using a time machine, are you?  ::)

As Ron says, 'thank you folks for all the great comments and id's'.  And a Romanic thank you to Roly for his id's.    First thing we always think about when we find very old coins is, 'I wonder who last handled the coin and did he or she notice it was missing and did they have a 'rollicking' for losing it in the first place'.  We'll never know, but we can romanticise. (or invent a time machine as Resurgam suggests).  Cheers and Happy Digging Everyone!!  Tom.
