Title: Posy Ring
Post by: celticspikey on January 27, 2018, 10:16:10 AM
Hi guys, I had an intersting days detecting Thursday and for once it was not raining, in fact with a brisk wind blowing and some sunshine it turned out to be a nice day. Some roman was had and several other bits and bob. However this ring popped up and to be honest it's a bit of a strange one.
Initially it looked like a nice silver posy ring with an inscription on the outer edge, it's still nice just a bit baffling.

Weight..4.3grms
Width....3cm
Inscription reads...(DYE TO LIVE)
It appears to light to be solid silver, perhaps a poor man's silver but it is has evidence of gold gilding on the inner and outer surfaces.
It also has what looks like a makers mark on the inside, which initially looked like a letter K, but closer examination looks more like some sort of animal design similar to a rabbit?...hopefully the close up of the mark in the photo will just about show up for you to see.
I guess the mark probably rules out anything early medieval so maybe 17th cent, I'm not sure.
Anyway the rest I leave up to you guys and welcome any input.

After some research I now see it as a 16th-17th C silver gilt posy..The makers mark is two "R" s back to back and the BM has this mark in one of their collection of rings. I guess its a possible treasure case now but I may get it back as it probably doesn't contain at least 10% of silver or gold by weight......If it comes back I guess the next thing is do I get it restored to correct shape, probably, if it doesn't I just take the measly valuation which I predict will be given......... ;D ;D ;D ;) ;) ;)
Any way hope you like it, cheers guys for now.....Spikey.

Very interesting Paul and very nice to find.  Great to see you've taken advantage of a break in the weather and taken yourself to the fields for a bit of digging.  Very successful digging too!!!  Good bit of research and a great write up.
Happy Digging !!!  Tom.

What a very unusual ring. Not a usual posy ring and not a usual message.
Be interesting to know what he PAS say about it
Once again, nice find Paul

Hi Spikey, Congrats, yet another nice find  :)
Have you considered it may be a Mourning Ring ?

Quite an interesting find again - it'll be interesting to see if it is solid silver or plated.

I once found a ring that was definitely copper, but also had a full set of hallmarks.......

Nice find Paul ;) if you get it back it will be a easyer fix than the last one you had repaired, has the solder joint completely came apart.

Hi Dale, yeh much easier than last one that was a proper restoration job. The ring is not split at the joint so with a bit of luck it shouldn't be too difficult mate. When you got a spare 5 min, Can you send me your latest e mail address...

It does seem a little light to be solid silver Roland but it's got good clean gilding. I will let you know.
