Title: Something Special Today
Post by: roughneck on January 20, 2018, 07:17:51 PM
Hi Folks,
Me and Ron braved the mist and drizzle today to spend a few hours in the Gloucestershire area.  The fields were wet and sticky, but it didn't prevent us from unearthing a few finds.  First I found a few Romans copper bronzes then had a typical silver sound from the Deus, and to my amazement I unearthed a beautiful little Celtic silver unit.  I've scoured the internet for a similar one but cannot find one anywhere, so if anyone has seen a likeness before I would appreciate some info.
Ron also had a few Romans and a Charles 1st half groat.  We had all the coins from the same area in the field and within a hundred sq. mtrs.  Quite a hotspot.  Other finds included bits of Roman brooches, musket balls, lots of lead and buttons and the usual scrap.  And of course we had our usual good laugh and plenty of grub.  (Got to upset the wife now because my clothes are covered in mud and I've no idea how to switch on the washing machine of course).
Cheers and Happy Digging !!!  Tom.

Like celticspikey, Paul, said a few days ago ‘What a Day’
2nd silver Celtic in just over a week, and it’s a beautiful sight to see. Lucky man.
The Romans aren’t bad either  ;D

Great coin it's a Dobunni Cotswold Crosses.

Val I missed the other Celtic who found it

Copper alloy Roman nummus / follis  of Galerius as Caesar. Obverse; MAXIMIANVS NOBIL C, laureate bust right. Reverse: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, naked except for chlamys over shoulder, modius on head pouring libations from patera in right hand with cornucopia in left hand. Mint mark S/F//IITR; Trier mint.

A son of Constantine (probably Constans) - half centenionalis / majorina FEL TEMP REPARATIO - after 348AD

Vespasian As (don't think it is big enough for a sestertius but it could be) reverse imnage is too fuzzy, but could be Aequitas standing

Last coin very similar to first (i.e follis, GEN POP ROMANI), and still Galerius - probably Trier (looks like the same bust type and form), but mint signature unreadable.

Good id on the celtic. That's a more interesting Dobunni type

Phew Tom, you and Ron well deserve the finds especially as the conditions are appalling in the fields at the moment, I struggled friday and I mean struggled lol. The silver unit is a corker, and the boys Dale and Roland are of course as usual on the money with the ID  ;) That hundred sq meters find spot is amazing who knows what else might turn up and the best of luck to you both.  ;)

Thanks for all the wonderful comments folks.  Really appreciate the id's, you fellow detectorists are so knowledgeable, it must have taken many years of learning to know as much as you do.
Me and Ron try and get out in the fields every weekend and because we have so many fields on which to detect we usually have a good choice of ground, pasture, plough, short crop, stubble etc.  We would however like to see more action out of fellow forum members as it's great to see what's coming out of the ground.  So come on folks, get the wellies on and start digging!!  Thanks Again.  Tom and Ron.

Nice Hammy Ron, and a cracking little Roman with great detail. It's always good to have a selection of fields in times of adverse weather conditions, keep the finds coming.  ;)

That's a nice Roman coin! It commemorates Constantinople becoming the twin capital of the Empire around 330-335 AD

Ah - I took my then small boy detecting a few times - he usually tried to escape from any field he was in by climbing over hedges......and then lost the silver coin I gave him....nowadays (at 12) he says if I buy him a Deus he would be more interested in detecting again (when he doesn't have his head buried in electronics) - as the Makro Racer II I let him use he doesn't like! Good thing he hasn't clocked the CTX 3030 from detectorists yet......
