Title: Possible buckle fragment
Post by: Radnor Bandit (Ian) on January 09, 2018, 09:51:19 PM
Any ideas on the date for this piece please.
I initially thought it to be a 18th century  buckle fragment,  but on closer examination it's hand made with a coarse cast back and roughish shaped filing to the contours. Found quite close to Offas dyke.
Thank you Ian
Here you go Val , better photos  ;)

Seems to be the week for tiny buckles, if that’s what it is. Pics aren’t too clear. It only looks to be broken on one side so not totally convinced.
It’s a lovely little find Ian. Maybe it’s a what not!

Thanks for the pics Ian, much more clear.
Passed a pleasant couple of hours looking and reading on this dreary wet morning.
I’ve now come to the conclusion that it is part of a buckle with the bar and tang missing. It is broadly similar to some illustrated in Chris Marshall’s ‘Buckles Through the Ages’ part 5 Medieval 1200 - 1250 and also some on ‘Colchester Treasure’ for the same period. None have the same pattern but the shape and design are a good match.
Yours seems to be in good condition, bet it cleaned up nicely.

Only spotted the ‘Sun Face’ on the centre bulge later. Wonder if it’s significant !
