Title: Iron Age Brooch
Post by: celticspikey on December 08, 2017, 06:10:35 PM
Hi guys,  I popped out yesterday for a few hours detecting , my initial thought was to try some medieval searching but as the field is in crop, and with the wet sticky conditions I was reluctant to make a mess on the field by trampling the crop around. So I decided to try some well rotted stubble on a roman site, this field you can search for hours with little to show but for a few grots but over the years it has produced some quality finds especially brooches, today was one of these days as an hour into searching up popped this cracking brooch from around 6", Deus, version 4....and trying out the Deep program.
The brooch dates to around the 4th-3rd Cent BC, La Tene 1, (Wessex) variety. I've shown a few photos to emphasise the decoration and beauty, Of course I would have liked the pin attached, but best I found the brooch than the pin........hope you enjoy this little piece history.

Your beautiful finds always amaze me Paul. Lovely brooch, once again.
With all of them you’ve found you could write an illustrated history !

Thanks Val, it's a chunky little brooch that I guess has been protected by depth in the soil for a long time, the odd thing is a couple of years ago I found another one with pin still intact and in catch plate only yards or so from this one. Just a coincidence I know. Thanks for your comment.... ;)

Thanks Andre, I wouldn't donate any thing to museums, it's bad enough they take treasure items off us and I've had several purse drops taken under the treasure act. which to this day are probably stuck in a box in a store room never to be seen by the public. So donating things like this wouldn't go on display, in my experience. It's a shame I guess they just got far too much stuff to display.  ;)

Fair enough,I just asked because sometimes I wonder if I come across such finds, which I never had, what would the right thing to do.
Probably would go straight to my FLO.
Not sure.its like opening a can of worms this type of conversation.

I guess its personal preference, no harm recording with FLOs many do many don't, I have lots recorded over the years. Nothing wrong opening up a can of worms mate, it gets opinions out in the open one way or the other.. Lol.  ;)

Cheers Roland, it didn't need much cleaning I admit, does help when they have stable bronze. Its been out of plough damage for years, thankfully.  ;)
