Me and Ron hit the road early yesterday, stopped off at our favourite eatery for a full cooked breakfast, yum yum, then started detecting at 9.15am.  It was damp and muggy most of the day, then some fine drizzle before we left for home at 4.15pm.
So we had a full day gridding our selected field.  We found thirteen Roman coins, nine pre-decimal, a bronze ring, a copper alloy what is it?, and a couple of bags full of bullets, buttons, lead and the usual scrap.  Yet another interesting and varied day with plenty of holes dug and a few finds for the collections.  Any ideas on the strange looking copper alloy artefact please and some id's on the Romans if possible?.
Ron will add his photos later  (maybe tomorrow, as he's gone to the club for a well earned pint or two).

Beggars imagination what the bronze was used for or even what to call it.  I’ve found several very similar. All are listed as Bronze Age/Iron Age,  unidentified. Lot of help there !
It’s def. a talking point and a very unusual find.
Hang on to it though, you never know when it might be ID’d

Thanks Val.  I like the idea on the PAS that it could be a dagger pommel, but it's so old we may never know.  Ron suggested it could be a dagger pommel when I showed it to him in the field.  It will probably be a surprise to the FLO when he gets to see it.

A cracking day again Tom, Dales on the money, I have turned a couple over ythe years although only one half of the mount. One was found in the Salisbury hoard as I remember from reading it some years ago, I recommend the book as its an excellent read of the finding of a large hoard on the slopes over looking the City, subsequently not declared and sold off, it involved dealers passing items on to some very influential people who collected antiquities,also great photoes of the hoard content.
I think they are more than likely attributed to the Iron Age, as for there function probably mounted on or below something so a dagger or sword hanger is my guess. May be one will be found attached and in a archeological context one day.
Either way.....I like a lot.  ;)

Hello guys,tom that pommel came up beautiful,lovely interesting find there fairplay,yes we had a very good day out,easy digging and plenty of it,alot of it was scrap,but you got to take the rough with the smooth really enjoyed it,here are my coin finds,cheers guys. ;)

Nice sestertius - Marcus Aurelius - I always wonder how people can lose coins that big :)

Tom, do a google search for.   Melissa Sullivan - Celtic sword hilt styles.

If it comes the same for you there will be a plate with different swords. Bottom row, 6th one in middle shows hilt and pommel very similar to yours.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments and excellent advice.  Me and Ron are learning more about the past and our history every time we head out.  It's great that we have people like you on the forum to advise and point us in the right direction.
Hopefully we will have more finds to show you after our next foray (next Saturday weather permitting).
