Title: Can anyone help further..please
Post by: dingdong on November 22, 2017, 06:57:27 PM
Hi,  I'm wondering if any one can put a bit more information on this broach which I detected some while back.
I know that it's a bit of a cheek to put the find up again..so sincere apologies folks.
It's just that I've been trying to find a Roman  broach with any of the similarities of the one pictured.
I look forward to hearing from you,and many thanks for looking.
Good hunting..👍

Nice Brooch Chris........Roman Trumpet Brooch, 1st-2nd Cent. Looks like it's got some enamelling I think,  difficult to tell from picture mate. It certainly got some nice inlaid decoration.  ;) ;)

Many thanks Paul and Greg for your appreciated inputs.
And your correct Paul,he broach definitely has some kind of enameling or something, slight traces of reds and greens !!...I didn't realize that it was that early AD(Thanks Paul &Val for the correction !! :-[ ???)
It was detected on a field down here n West Wales...(where the Romans NEVER came !!.. LOL !!!...its also on the same field that I find Roman coin ...
Greg, I think that you are on the money by suggesting that I contact you local FLO...and see what he can make of it...once again thanks both ...and good hunting..👍
P.S:...Do you think it has a bit of an Aztec look about it ?... ???

1st-2nd Cent AD Chris, not BC........Or to put a tighter date AD 75- AD 170 ish.

More along the lines of Romano British fan tail 1st to 2nd cent AD absolutely stunning condition for these parts if we’re right. Fingers crossed Chris. Hope someone gets back to you ASAP

Paul that’s what’s known as  Spot the deliberate mistake.  ;D

Tis a nice Brooch Chris and well done to you. I to have found several Roman Brooches in the Pembrokeshire area, A Roman Spoon and a small hoard of Roman Coins which is still going through the Treasure process (3 years now) so yes as you say they where here.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on a really good find Chris.

Looks like Paul had it off pat. Shouldn’t argue with the Brooch Guru should I  ::)
I like the idea of the Celtic connection though. Great find.

I've just looked at my brooch book - (Mackreth, Brooches in late iron age and roman britain) and it is comparable to number 4926, itemised as trumpet type 1.2b3, and dates to before 130AD. (Spray of three petals on head), mentioning Wroxeter.
