Title: silver spoon Post by: Andre on October 24, 2017, 11:35:43 AM hi guys,went literally for an hour to one of my permissions coming from work and manage to get a few decent items,hoping to go today but the weather is bad around here,that's why i went there yesterday in the first place.
Anyway,i've got this two what i call mounts,don't have a clue about vintage and id and a little silver spoon with some hallmarks on it.Anyone has a clue about hallmarks and age? Thanks Ps: lately my permissions are a bit limited for use due to cattle grazing,grass to high,crops still on them,seeded fields,are you guys experiencing similar problems? The silver spoon is a really good find but the hall marks don’t seem to be British. If they are the spoon would be really old and they would be makers marks but the design looks more modern. As for the spoon it looks like a christening spoon and you are right,the hallmarks look different from the examples I saw.I think I see an MD and a V&R,I don’t know. Still a good find.I found as well a trade token but very worn,couldn’t get any details,but shows the field was busy sometime ago. The hallmarks are nearly polished out. Looking from left to right is the lion sterling mark facing left next to it looks like a monarch mark. (indicating a tax had been paid. These were used from 1784 to 1890)
Judging by the wear to the silver most likely an early date in the series. I have a couple of bits that a missing either date letter or assay office . This makes dating a bit harder These 2 are a good example as they don't have the city mark and dating is a problem as there was no standarisation and different assay offices (cities) used different letters for the same year.
