Title: Bronze item found on a Roman site any idea?
Post by: BeachHunter101 on September 09, 2017, 12:08:20 PM
It has got that 'look' that it could be very old it has lines running down what I presume is the back and has some design going around the edges. It looks to me like some kind of nut maybe it's a pendant? I didn't want to clean it just in case I damaged it Has anybody got any idea thank you  ;D

Hate to disappoint you but I think it's an old lead fishing weight.

Can you check if it's magnetic. If noit's lead. If yes it could be bronze, brass or copper. That might make a difference to ID

I tested it with a magnet and it's not magnetic :) It's definitely not lead  :)

Seems I got it wrong. I've been going round checking everything metal I could find with a magnet.
I knew lead wasn't magnetic and from testing a Bronze Age Unit I found neither is bronze.
The thing that made me think twice was the green on your item. It looks like Bronze disease. My Unit is now a lovely shade of green.
There was a bit of discussion about my Unit so to prove the point I attacked it with a nail file. There, under the patena was a lovely golden glow so I included it in a box of finds for the FLO who confirmed and returned.
Why not try the same, maybe on the small bit at the top.
