Title: This Weekends Finds
Post by: roughneck on September 03, 2017, 04:31:11 PM
Hi Folks
Me and Ron spent the day on one of our estates on Saturday.  The weather was warm and sunny, a t-shirt was the order of the day.
After a full English breakfast in a nearby café we headed to the first field which was in stubble.  This field produced six Romans for Ron and none for me, so fed up with the stubble we moved to a very big field of perhaps 50-60 acres where we did a fair bit of marching about before we found a few interesting areas.  A varietyof finds started to show and we ended the day with quite a mixture of coins and artefacts. (please see photos and ID of any would be appreciated, thank you).
We also met up with a couple of detectorists who had been searching on a nearby estate.  They said they had been working the area for over ten years and told us they had found thousands of Roman coins and hundreds of hammies in the area.  In fact they had enough to start their own museum in one of the estate properties.
So after a lovely day, both hot and exhausted, we eventually gave up and headed for the hills, only to be stuck in traffic at the Usk bridge on the M4 which extended our travel time by a further half hour.  A long day as we left home at 6am and returned home at 8pm.
Cheers and Happy Digging!!  Tom.

Some truly wonderful finds there for both of you. But the one to watch out for is the ring and you haven't even given it a mention.
Unless I'm mistaken it's an excellent condition, high quality gold ring set with, probably a dark Safire and dating from the Tudor period. If so it's valuable. Get it checked out it needs recording.
Then get back and find some more  ;D

Fantastic Ron!!  All our finds cleaned up nicely.  That horse harness pendant is lovely and the ring is superb, and what about that Jetton!!   What next for us I wonder?  See you tomorrow.  Tom.

Cracking finds guys you've really come up trumps on this site. Can't wait for next instalment....
Incidentally the Gold Ring is a (Stirrup) Ring and dates as early as the 13th century....and obviously qualifies as treasure under the act.

Get it profesionally valued by a couple of sale houses, for I expect it will be claimed as treasure.........Has to be worth £2,000.... At auction.....Just giving you a bit of warning you know what the TVCs are like latley.

Well done. ;) ;)
