Title: axe head mould ?????
Post by: wagis on August 11, 2017, 08:07:16 PM
Found these today, it looks like the two halves of an axe head mold I believe. They were about 18 inches down and in clay/sandy soil well below the normal soil layer. They are very very heavy for their size and look really old. Would appreciate any comments if anybody knows any more info. As can be seen both halves fit together and you can see the bit where the little curved handle fits on in the mold.

George
It most certainly is. A very scarce dare I say rare find. These are usually found as parts of a bronze smiths hoard with axe heads and scrap bronze. I would be returning for a closer look around.

What a great find. Even better than an axe head.
I'm pretty sure it's a mould for a socketed axe head. Have a look at this site

gransforsbruk.com.   History of the axe

It has a description and a photo of a mould.
Well found.

Very rare find, particularly in Wales. Looks to me like a mould for casting Palstave axe heads.

Well done  ;)

Thanks for all the comments everyone, I have been informed it comes under the treasure act (every time I get a decent find)

Thanks for all the comments everyone, I have been informed it comes under the treasure act (every time I get a decent find)

Would only be Treasure Act if the two halves are classed as separate items or if you found other items of the same age with it. A single find of non-precious metal is not Treasure as defined by the act.

Should be recorded with the FLO anyway as it is a really important find.

Thanks Neil, I went back this morning and I couldn't even find the hole I took it from as the moles had been out overnight and made a mess of the area where I found it ( little blighters) but after two hours search of the area I only found a small piece of bronze and a strange piece of iron that looks a bit like an ancient chisel tool of sorts. I found the mould with my Deus at around 15 to 18 inches deep and took a lot of digging out. I don't see why it should be claimed as treasure even though it is a very rare find here in  N Wales but that is what I have heard from the flo. Anyway thanks for all the comments folks and I can't wait to search the rest of the fields.

Sorry George are you saying the FLO is saying you have to declare it as potential treasure?

Title: Re: axe head mould ?????
Post by: wagis on August 13, 2017, 08:59:20 AM
Yes they are saying so as it is in two parts.

George.
You know my opinion on it. I think its pants mate. It is one item not two.

Challenge their opinion at the coroner's court George , he makes the decision if it's treasure or not.

nice find mate, what metal is the mold made out of  ::) the kind of thing you would see in a museum

I can't see its a (GROUP of 2 or more objects) as descrbed in the Act to qualify as potential treasure...It is  1 object in two halves.

Dont worry about the FLO its the Coroner who who decides.....
Keep us updated thou..

George that is a wonderful find...any chance you could bring it along to our next dig, I would love to see it and feel it lol.
important its recorded and I certainly don't think its 2 items...its one item in 2 halves. wonder if I would have dug it up as it was so deep?

That's a fantastic find - thanks for sharing.

I'd always assumed that these moulds were made from clay or stone, although it is possible that the mould was used to make a wax model which was then covered in clay - using the 'lost wax' process.

That is a good possibility and might be why so few are found

A mate of mine has just found one half of a large axe mould, still searching for the other half. It has a leaf design on the outer side as would the other half, this enabled the owner to ID the moulds in order they matched. The 2 halfs of the moulds would be secured together before pouring the bronze straight into them to make the Axe.
Stunning artefacts.... ;)
